Safe to use

Soft silicones are safe to use and are chemical inert. Soft silicones which are used in the medical or surgical world cause only very seldom allergic reactions or irritations. Tests on animals prove that soft silicones do not cause skin reactions, nor systemic toxicity. Worldwide, ‘Regulatory bodies ‘ have approved the usage of soft silicones as wound dressing.

Silicone is chemical inert ( see above ); no chemical interaction with wounds are seen. Studies did not show a significant effect on cells, important during the wound healing process. Soft silicone dressings can be painlessly removed from the wound; they do not cause any trauma to the wound bed or surrounding skin; therefore it is clear that soft silicone dressings do not have any influence during the wound healing process.

Soft silicones do not enter the bloodstream under normal circumstances. Silicones are insoluble in wound fluid and silicon molecules are too large to penetrate cell membranes, skin or blood vessel wall. Therefore, soft silicones can’t be transported through the body and won’t cause systemic reactions.

Silicones are inert; only in very rare occasions they provoke a skin hypersensity- other wound dressings are frequently the cause of allergic reactions. Silicones are widely used in cosmetic products.

Soft silicones do not absorb. However, they can be used in combination with absorbing dressings and can be used on exuding wounds.
